About EndBloodCobalt

EndBloodCobalt is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of miners in the Congo who extract cobalt, a vital component of lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones, laptops, and electric cars. The majority of the world's cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where an estimated 150,000 artisanal and small-scale miners work in dangerous and often exploitative conditions to extract the mineral.

Many of these miners are children who work long hours in cramped mines without proper safety equipment or protection. They are at risk of accidents, respiratory illnesses, and exposure to toxic chemicals. Despite the important role they play in the global economy, these miners are often paid very low wages and are vulnerable to exploitation by middlemen and traders.

EndBloodCobalt works to raise awareness of the challenges faced by these miners and to provide them with the support they need to work safely and sustainably. We collaborate with local communities, governments, and international organizations to improve working conditions, promote human rights, and ensure that mining activities are environmentally responsible.

What is Cobalt and What is it Used For?

Cobalt is a hard, lustrous metal that is primarily used as an alloy to strengthen other metals. It is also used in the production of rechargeable batteries, particularly those used in smartphones, laptops, and electric cars. As the demand for these devices has grown, so has the demand for cobalt. In 2019, the DRC produced approximately 70% of the world's cobalt, making it a key player in the global supply chain.

Many companies in the technology and automotive industries rely on cobalt for their products. Some of the largest buyers of Congolese cobalt include Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, and Tesla. While these companies have taken steps to address human rights and environmental issues in their supply chains, there is still much work to be done to ensure that mining activities in the DRC are sustainable and socially responsible.
